Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) at the University of California, Berkeley
The Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) at the University of California, Berkeley is a regional research and education center, with a network of over 20 universities, multiple consulting firms, and state and federal government agencies. PEER's research focuses primarily on performance-based seismic engineering, addressing the diverse economic and safety needs of both people and society. The center's research disciplines include structural and geotechnical engineering, geology, seismology, lifeline systems, transportation, risk management, and public policy.
In 2018, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the TBTC and the PEER, establishing a collaborative research and talent development program, thus creating a cross-national research center. Currently, two bilateral projects are being implemented, where both parties conduct tests at different stages. The findings from large-scale experiments aim to address practical design concerns and provide the primary basis for revising standards, ensuring that academic research directly translates into industry regulations. Additionally, PhD students from Department of Construction and Civil Engineering of NTUST are selected annually to spend a year at PEER, engaging in joint research and publishing papers.
